Remember to relax
Three new spas open in time for pre-holiday madness.

A Santa Barbara getaway presents a delightful dilemma: Where to stay—downtown or the beach? There are great hotels on State Street, in the thick of the restaurants, shops, and coffeehouses. But there are also ocean-view rooms along the beach on Cabrillo Boulevard. If you stay at Harbor View Inn, perfectly located on the corner of State Street and Cabrillo, you get the best of both locations. And now the hotel just opened its brand-new Spa Beaumontia. Named for the flowering vine that grows along the property, the spa is small with just two treatment rooms for massages and facials, plus a separate, private mani/pedi room. Still, it is undeniably sumptuous with all the luxe touches like
heated massage beds; locker rooms stocked with every possible amenity; pharmaceuticalgrade products (including an “instant lift” facial that may visibly tighten face and neck); premium massage oils and scrubs; and showers with multiple jets and dual rain showerheads. The spa’s adults-only Jacuzzi and dry sauna are free to hotel guests and offer a private outdoor relaxation space in a garden setting, away from the main pool.

It’s all so lovely that you may decide to skip the beach and the boutiques and just camp out at the spa. But save some time for Santa Barbara’s alluring attractions: Harbor View Inn faces the ocean, with views of the pier, Stearns Wharf, and sailboats. Cross the street, and you’re a short walk to the bird estuary, Sunday Art Walk, bicycle/jogging path, soft sand, and gentle waves. Or turn up State Street and find yourself in the heart of beautiful
downtown Santa Barbara.

To get gorgeous in a hurry, get yourself to Dermatique in Westlake Village. This new spa-like skincare center is owned by Marc Kerner, M.D., a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. The menu includes services like laser skin rejuvenation, laser hair reduction, micro-dermabrasion, acne treatments, leg vein therapy, wrinkle reduction, skin tightening, and all the injectables and fillers.

Dermatique is also the only facility in the area that offers Liposlim, an FDA-approved procedure touted as a non-surgical and subtle alternative to liposuction for reducing cellulite and fat volume. Its results will not be as noticeable as with liposuction, and it doesn’t cause weight loss, but you will supposedly end up smoother, tighter, and firmer. The procedure, which feels like a warm, rolling, kneading massage, uses radio frequency to target, heat, and manipulate deep fatty tissues in the stomach, hips, thighs, buttocks (or wherever your problem area is located). It doesn’t hurt, but the preliminary details of weighing in, getting measured, and baring your bumpy adipose tissue for a “before” photo can be painful, at least psychologically. Price starts at $500 per area for five weekly treatments; periodic maintenance treatments are recommended.

Sometimes you crave the whole spa package: the fragrant candles, soft slippers, yummy robes, and the promise of several hours luxuriating in saunas, steam rooms, and waterfall-fed whirlpools. And other times, you just don’t have the time or money for such froufrou. You just want—no, you need—a good massage in a relaxing setting. That’s what Massage Heights in Westlake Village is about.

Massage Heights is not really a spa and it doesn’t pretend to be, but you’ll find several nice touches such as aromatherapy, heated massage beds, and insanely soft linens. The place sets itself apart from lavish spas in its pricing. For first-time visitors, a 50-minute massage costs just $40. After that, you can become a “member” for $60 a month, which includes a monthly aromatherapy massage, plus discounts on additional massages and add-ons such as hot towel/cold stone face massages, hot stone therapy, and peppermint foot and leg scrubs. A retail line of lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint home diffusers, body butters, oils, and lotions lets you continue the experience at home.
